Big Funding Boost for Arkansas’ Only Doctor-Scientist Program
Little Rock, Arkansas, USAWed Jun 17 2026
The University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences just landed a $2. 6 million grant to grow its seven-to-eight-year M. D. /Ph. D. track—the only one like it in the state. Over five years, the cash will let the program bring in more students faster than before. Instead of taking just two to four students every year, it will start with four the first year, then ramp up to eight, and eventually keep about ten scholars in training at once. That’s a big jump from the current cap of 22.
Federal money comes from the National Institute of General Medical Sciences, part of the NIH. The cash is earmarked for the school’s Medical Scientist Training Program, which is designed to build a pipeline of clinician-scientists who can bridge labs and clinics. Each trainee gets full tuition plus a $28, 000 stipend—enough to cover living costs while they work. That kind of support makes the program stand out, especially for students who might otherwise leave Arkansas for schools with similar NIH backing.
Right now the program blends two years of med school, three to four years of Ph. D. research, then wraps up with two more years of clinical training. Once they graduate, most split their week between running a research lab and seeing patients. Some land jobs at academic hospitals, others join biotech firms or federal research agencies. The school says the new funding could also draw more applicants because the NIH stamp is a powerful signal that the training meets high standards.
Since UAMS runs the only dual-degree track in a four-state slice of the South, this grant turns the school into a regional magnet for both medicine and science. Program leaders hope the extra slots will help fill gaps left when top Arkansas students bypassed the in-state option in favor of programs with NIH funding. With more hands on deck, Arkansas could start producing more homegrown experts who tackle both patient care and biomedical puzzles.
