Bondi Beach Tragedy Sparks Calls for Stronger Safety and Gun Rules
Sydney, AustraliaThu Apr 30 2026
The last year’s shooting on Bondi Beach left 15 people dead at a Jewish celebration. A new report from the Royal Commission says more protection is needed for Jewish events and that gun laws should be tightened. The report does not blame the country’s legal system for stopping the attack, but it shows how better security could help.
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said his government will follow all the recommendations that have been released so far. He added that five of the suggestions are still hidden because they involve national security.
The investigation was set up after Jewish groups and families demanded answers, especially because the Prime Minister had been slow to start it. The report is 154 pages long and will be finished by the end of this year.
It says that the country’s counter‑terrorism teams should be examined and updated quickly. The findings will go to police leaders and the top security officer within three months.
The report also asks for stronger guards during Jewish holidays like Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur, and at other big Jewish events. It wants the government to speed up a plan that would buy back guns from people who own them.
Officials say the report shows ways to improve safety at both federal and state levels. Public hearings will begin next week, and the final report is due by year’s end.
