Boston’s World Cup Fan Zone closes early over storm fears

Boston, USAFri Jun 19 2026
Bostonians planning to enjoy the FIFA Fan Festival at City Hall Plaza got some unwelcome news early Thursday morning. City leaders announced the outdoor party would shut down for the day because a warm front rolling through Massachusetts threatened to bring damaging winds and heavy rain. Experts from the National Weather Service had been briefing organizers daily on the shifting forecasts, warning that severe storms could pop up anytime. The call to close was less about canceling the fun and more about keeping tens of thousands of fans safe in an open space with little overhead cover. The festival opened June 12 and was set to keep the crowds coming until June 27, offering live match screenings plus food stalls, live music, and fan games. But June 18 turned into a washout, and officials urged anyone who’d penciled in a visit to pick a different day. The shutdown didn’t affect the games themselves—none of the four scheduled matches on Thursday were in Foxborough—so soccer still rolled on elsewhere in the state.
Meteorologist Caitlyn Mensch pointed out that when the risk is “probably” going to be dangerous, the smart move is to pull the plug. Outdoor gatherings with that many people can quickly turn into danger zones when lightning starts cracking overhead. It’s a balancing act every host city faces during big sporting events: keep the celebration alive or shut it down before the weather turns against you. Fans had another way to catch the action—every day the plaza screened two or three matches on massive screens—but Thursday’s schedule included Czechia vs. South Africa at noon, Switzerland vs. Bosnia and Herzegovina at 3 p. m. , Canada vs. Qatar at 6 p. m. , and Mexico vs. South Korea at 9 p. m. Organizers kept the message simple: safety first, fun second.
