"Last weekend, 'Venom: The Last Dance' topped the box office charts in mainland China for the second week in a row. It even beat out a new thriller called 'Cesium Fallout, ' which stars famous Hong Kong actor Andy Lau. 'Venom' made RMB104 million ($14. 6 million) over the weekend, bringing its total to RMB477 million ($67. 3 million) after 12 days. That's a bit slower than 'Alien: Romulus' did in China.
Meanwhile, 'Cesium Fallout' started strong, earning RMB69 million ($9. 8 million) in its opening weekend. This film is special because it's China's first movie about a nuclear disaster. It was directed by Anthony Pun and is being released in China by Alibaba Pictures.
'The Unseen Sister, ' a mystery drama from Myanmar-born, Taiwan-based director Midi Z, also did well. It made RMB25 million ($3. 5 million) in its second weekend, totaling RMB129 million ($18. 5 million) after nine days. Plus, it joined the Tokyo International Film Festival this week.
The fourth 'Harry Potter' movie, 'Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, ' is still popular. It made RMB24. 7 million ($3. 4 million) last weekend, with RMB700, 000 coming from Imax screens.
A new Chinese horror film, 'Yuanyang Lou, ' directed by Wang Shenghe, came in fifth. It earned RMB19. 5 million ($2. 8 million) in its opening weekend.
The total box office for the weekend was RMB302 million ($43. 7 million), bringing the year-to-date total to RMB38. 3 billion ($5. 45 billion). That's about 21% less than last year. "
