Scientists have been diving into the connection between religion and the brain, and they're finding some interesting links. It turns out that spiritual experiences might depend on how different parts of the brain talk to each other. Key players in this brain network are the default mode network (DMN), the frontoparietal network (FPN), and the salience network (SN). This fits nicely with what's known as the Triple Network or Tripartite Model (TPM) of brain function.
Take, for example, those intense spiritual moments people sometimes have. Scientists think these might be due to the way these brain networks interact. Even when people are under the influence of psychedelic drugs, they can have mystical experiences that seem to follow the same brain pattern.
But it's not just about the brain's day-to-day work. Dreams and REM sleep might also play a part in feeling connected to something bigger. As for those beliefs about supernatural agents, well, they might be shaped by how our brains develop over time.
Looking ahead, researchers want to understand how these brain networks change as we grow and how religious beliefs can influence society, both for better and worse.
