Brazil's Racial Shifts: Skin Color and Identity

In the past few years, Brazil's non-White population (including those who identify as Brown and Black) has grown to be the majority for the first time since the 1800s. This shift is mainly due to changes in how people identify their race. But how does skin color, which is a major factor in determining race in Brazil, play into this? Research using data from six surveys between 2010 and 2023 found some interesting trends.Over the 13-year period, there was a noticeable "darkening" of racial identification. People with medium and dark skin increasingly identified as Black. On the other hand, those with light skin started to identify more as Brown. However, this trend among light-skinned individuals was partly influenced by changes in how interviewers reported skin color during the same time frame. Education level didn't seem to play a big role in these changes over time. These findings offer insight into the growing trend of racial reclassification, which might be linked to an increase in Black consciousness and the expansion of racial quotas in federal universities and public jobs to include both Brown and Black Brazilians.
