Budget Battle: War Money vs Home Needs
Washington DC, USASun Apr 05 2026
Pete Buttigieg, the former transportation chief, posted on X that President Trump’s latest budget plan focuses heavily on overseas conflicts. The proposal adds about $500 billion for foreign wars, which equals roughly $3, 700 extra per U. S. household. At the same time, it cuts funding for health care, jobs, housing and education.
Buttigieg argues the money shift hurts ordinary Americans. He says the budget makes life at home more expensive while piling on costs for overseas battles.
Other Democrats also criticized the plan. Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer called it “rotten to the core. ” He pointed out that energy, housing and schooling would suffer. Senator Elizabeth Warren added that families would see higher energy bills while the administration spends a billion dollars each day on war in Iran.
Representative Adam Schiff warned that Medicare and Medicaid could be endangered. He pledged to oppose the spending. Governor J. B. Pritzker noted rising gas prices, disease outbreaks and higher grocery costs as evidence that the priorities are off track.
Trump defended his defense spending by citing low ammunition stocks. He blamed U. S. aid to Ukraine for the shortage and criticized former President Biden for not restocking supplies. He also highlighted that defense contractors are expanding production lines.
The Defense Secretary said the budget covers both past and future needs. A senior adviser reported that the U. S. -Iran conflict cost $12 billion, and no extra funding was required from Congress.
The debate shows a clash between spending on international military actions and investing in domestic services that many families rely on.
