A recent probe in a large Colorado school district has turned the spotlight on nearly $3 million of contracts and questions about international travel. The investigation, led by the board president, focuses on agreements signed between the district and a Texas‑based education firm called Education Accelerated. The contracts, ranging from $41 800 to over $2 million, were intended to launch a teacher‑training program that pairs students with local schools while they earn college degrees. After the superintendent and his wife signed several of these contracts, concerns grew over whether their personal ties to the firm’s founder might have influenced decisions. The board also noted that the superintendent flew to Brazil for a two‑day conference hosted by a partner school, an expense not covered by the district. While the trip was paid for by external sponsors, its timing—shortly before a large contract was signed—raised red flags.The district’s legal counsel has stated that all payments were approved by the board, but documents show that some travel invoices exceeded the $5 000 limit set in the contracts. Invoices for trips to Virginia Beach, San Francisco, and other out‑of‑state locations appeared without proper documentation. As a result, the district terminated all contracts with Education Accelerated in February and is demanding detailed receipts. To tighten oversight, the board lowered the approval threshold for staff to sign contracts from $400 000 to just over $250 000, and added a requirement for any purchase above $5 000 to receive legal review.
