Can UConn Be Stopped in March Madness?
USA, StorrsMon Mar 16 2026
The question that has rattled fans all season is simple: can anyone knock UConn out of the tournament? After 34 games, the answer has been a clear no. The Huskies have held up against every challenge that came their way, even when teams like Michigan, Tennessee and Villanova pushed them to the limit. Coach Auriemma says that consistency has been key, keeping the team at a steady level from November to the tournament finale.
The regular season schedule didn’t test UConn with many top‑seeded teams. They faced only one other Big East team and missed the other No. 1 seeds entirely, giving them a smoother road to the postseason. Now they must confront the best teams in the country and prove whether any weaknesses show up under pressure.
One point of concern is how many 3‑pointers UConn allows—about 25 per game. That number isn’t bad because the Huskies protect the paint so well that opponents often shoot from distance when they can’t find other ways to score. But if a team gets hot behind the arc, UConn usually sticks to its base defense instead of adjusting. Michigan nearly caught up in November when Syla Swords hit 8 of 14 threes, and Villanova made seven early in a game that gave them a halftime lead.
Teams that shoot a lot from beyond the arc, such as Vanderbilt and Tennessee, could pose real threats. Vanderbilt is among the nation’s leaders in 3‑point attempts and makes a good percentage of them. Their star scorer, Mikayla Blakes, can pull the line as easily as Swords does. Tennessee’s strength is in forcing turnovers; they made 10 turnovers in the first 20 minutes against UConn. Ohio State and Texas also run full‑court pressure, with the Buckeyes now forcing over 21 turnovers per game and the Longhorns ranking second in that category. Texas’s recent win over South Carolina shows how effective a full‑court press can be against top teams.
UCLA is another contender, even though they struggled in last year’s Final Four. They’ve added perimeter shooters like Charlisse Leger‑Walker and Gianna Kneepkens, the latter of whom can replicate Swords’s shooting style. If UCLA brings that fire to the court, they could keep UConn in check even if they don’t win.
Overall, UConn still has the statistical edge. They lead the country in scoring margin, shooting efficiency, assists and defensive rating. Their record shows they exploit opponents’ weaknesses rather than being exploited themselves. Even if a team like Vanderbilt, Texas or UCLA can shake the Huskies, it is wiser to bet on UConn’s continued dominance.
