Canada and China are taking steps to mend their diplomatic relationship. This comes after a long period of tension. Prime Minister Mark Carney is in China for a four-day visit. This is the first visit by a Canadian prime minister in nearly ten years.
During a meeting in Beijing, China's Foreign Minister Wang Yi expressed a desire to strengthen cooperation with Canada. He also mentioned the need to eliminate interference. This was part of a larger effort to improve relations between the two countries.
Carney is scheduled to meet with Chinese Premier Li Qiang and President Xi Jinping. These meetings are expected to further discussions on improving ties. Canadian Foreign Minister Anita Anand was also present. She emphasized the importance of continued progress for the benefit of both countries.
The tension between Canada and China has been ongoing since 2017. A recent point of contention was Canada's tariffs on Chinese electric vehicles. This led to China imposing tariffs on Canadian farm and food products. As a result, Chinese imports of Canadian goods dropped by 10. 4% in 2025.
Canada is also looking to diversify its export markets. This is partly due to tariffs imposed by the U. S. on Canadian goods. The U. S. has also suggested that Canada could become its 51st state. This has added to the urgency of improving relations with China.
