Canada’s Budget Deficit Surges to $55 Billion
Canada, OttawaSat May 30 2026
In the fiscal year that ended in March 2026, Canada’s government ran a larger budget shortfall than the previous year. The deficit climbed to 55. 28 billion Canadian dollars, up from 43. 15 billion a year earlier, according to the finance ministry’s report.
Spending grew by 1. 6% across most major programs, while revenue increased only modestly—about 1. 1%—thanks mainly to higher customs duties and tax receipts from businesses and individuals.
Interest payments on the country’s debt rose slightly, by 0. 1%, because the average interest rate on newly issued bonds went up and inflation adjustments on some securities added cost. These gains were partly offset by lower rates on short‑term treasury bills and cheaper cross‑currency swaps.
Monthly figures show a March deficit of 29. 73 billion, compared with 23. 88 billion in March the previous year, indicating a growing trend in spending outpacing income.
The rise in deficits highlights the challenge Canada faces in balancing fiscal responsibility with ongoing public investment and economic recovery efforts.
