Caribbean Weather System on the Move: Jamaica & Cayman Islands on Alert

A weather system brewing in the south-central Caribbean is causing some concern. Forecasters in Miami expect it to strengthen and head north. Jamaica and the Cayman Islands are already on high alert, with tropical storm and hurricane warnings issued. This system could packing a punch, bringing heavy rain to Cuba, Florida, and even the northern Gulf Coast later in the week.At 7 p. m. on Sunday, this weather disturbance was around 345 miles south of Kingston, Jamaica. It had winds of about 35 mph, but forecasters predict it will intensify, possibly becoming a tropical storm by Monday. They also expect it to shift direction, moving more northwest. Heavy rain is expected, with Jamaica and southern Cuba potentially getting up to 9 inches. Residents in Cuba and the Florida Keys are advised to keep an eye on this storm. It's expected to near Jamaica by late Monday and the Cayman Islands by Tuesday and Wednesday. Flooding and mudslides are possible in the affected areas. The system might also bring heavy rains to Florida and the southeastern U. S. by the middle to end of the week.
