Catching Cyber Fraud Rings Beyond Africa’s Shores

SwitzerlandWed Apr 29 2026
Swiss police have taken ten people into custody, most of them Nigerian-born, on suspicion of running high-tech scams from within Switzerland. The group stands accused of tricking people online out of millions in Swiss francs through fake romance stories and other digital cons. Europol confirms the arrests and links the case to Black Axe, a network that began forty years ago as a campus club in Nigeria but now resembles a full-blown criminal enterprise.
What started as student debates eventually turned into a worldwide operation that mixes cyber-crime with hard cash. Authorities describe Black Axe as an organized, sometimes violent group that launders the stolen money through regular banks, making the crime harder to trace. The Swiss swoop is the latest in a string of European crackdowns targeting the same network. Last January, Spanish police pulled off a similar raid. In 2023, Interpol also ran a global dragnet against Black Axe. Each operation shows how far an old student movement has traveled from its academic roots to become a cross-border headache for police.
