The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is facing serious challenges. This year, the agency experienced severe budget cuts, staff reductions, and even physical damage to its headquarters. Over 500 bullets were fired at the building, targeting the scientists and public health experts inside. These experts have been sidelined and overruled by Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. , who is known for his anti-vaccine stance and has been pushing an agenda that contradicts scientific evidence.
On August 27, Kennedy fired CDC Director Susan Monarez just weeks after her Senate confirmation. Monarez had refused to approve vaccine recommendations from a panel of skeptics that Kennedy had personally selected. Her dismissal led to chaos within the agency, and she was not the only one to leave that day. Three top leaders also resigned in protest: Drs. Demetre Daskalakis, Debra Houry, and Daniel Jernigan.
Dr. Daskalakis was in charge of the CDC's National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases. He managed responses to various health crises, including mpox, measles, seasonal flu, bird flu, COVID-19, and RSV. Dr. Houry, the medical officer and deputy director for Program and Science, oversaw nine centers and the Office of Science, which had a combined budget of over $6 billion. She was the agency's second-highest-ranking official. Dr. Jernigan, the director of the National Center for Emerging and Zoonotic Infectious Diseases, had worked at the CDC for over 30 years and led responses to numerous health crises, including Ebola outbreaks and the 2003 SARS pandemic.
These three former officials will join Ars Technica for a discussion on December 16 at 2 pm ET. They will share their experiences and insights into what is happening at the CDC under Kennedy's leadership and the potential consequences for the country's health. The discussion will focus on the impact of ideology over evidence in public health policy and how to address the damage caused.
The CDC's current situation raises concerns about the future of public health in the country. The resignation of top scientists and the push for an anti-science agenda could have serious implications for public health policies and the well-being of the population. It is crucial to understand the consequences of these actions and work towards restoring evidence-based decision-making in public health.
