Dick Van Dyke, a beloved figure in comedy and acting, recently marked his 100th birthday. This milestone comes long after his iconic roles in "Mary Poppins" and his popular TV show, "The Dick Van Dyke Show. " Van Dyke, now a century old, still has a zest for life and plans to keep going. To honor his birthday, theaters across the country are screening a new documentary titled "Dick Van Dyke: 100th Celebration. " This film highlights his impressive career, which includes winning a Tony Award for "Bye Bye Birdie, " a Grammy, and four Primetime Emmys. He even became the oldest winner of a Daytime Emmy just last year for his role in "Days of Our Lives. " Van Dyke's journey to 100 has not been without challenges. In the 1970s, he overcame alcoholism and openly discussed his struggles, which was rare at the time. Reflecting on his past roles, he admitted that he often portrayed older characters as grumpy and irritable. However, he now realizes that aging isn't quite like that.
In his book, "100 Rules for Living to 100: An Optimist’s Guide to a Happy Life, " Van Dyke shares his insights on reaching this significant age. He credits his wife, Arlene Silver, for keeping him young and energetic. "She gives me energy. She gives me humor, and all kinds of support, " he shared. Born in West Plains, Missouri, in 1925, Van Dyke grew up in Danville, Illinois, where he was known as the class clown. His love for acting began at a young age when he played the baby Jesus in a Christmas pageant. He recalls making a joke that made the congregation laugh, and he loved the sound of their laughter. Despite his age, Van Dyke still tries to dance, although he admits that movement has become more difficult. "I miss movement, " he said, mentioning that he has one game leg. Yet, his spirit remains undeterred, and he continues to inspire others with his positivity and humor.
