When women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) look for nutrition advice, they often turn to chatbots like Chat Generative Pretrained Transformer (ChatGPT). But is this advice reliable and easy to understand? A recent study checked out ChatGPT's responses to common nutrition questions from women with PCOS. Both English and Turkish versions were reviewed. Two authors and a panel of dietitians rated the answers for reliability and quality using special scores called modified DISCERN and global quality score. They also measured how easy the answers were to read using common readability formulas.
The good news? Most of the answers were high quality, according to the experts. But here's where things get tricky. The reliability of the answers was only fair, with scores ranging from 40% to 79%. And the readability? Well, it was classified as "difficult to read, " requiring college-level reading skills. In English, there was no clear relationship between how reliable, good, or easy to read the answers were. But in Turkish, there was a significant link between the quality and readability of the responses.
So, what does this all mean? ChatGPT's nutrition advice for PCOS is generally good, but there's still room for improvement in reliability and readability. While the chatbot can provide useful information, it shouldn't replace personalized advice from healthcare professionals for managing PCOS effectively.
