In Chile, wildfires are causing serious trouble. The president, Gabriel Boric, has called a state of emergency in two areas: Ñuble and Biobío. These places are about 500km south of the capital, Santiago. Sadly, 16 people have died, and over 20, 000 have had to leave their homes. The fires are destroying everything in their path, including around 250 houses near the city of Concepción.
The situation is getting worse because of strong winds and high temperatures. These conditions make it hard for firefighters to control the fires. In fact, there are 24 fires burning across the country, with the most dangerous ones in Ñuble and Biobío. The fires have already burned 20, 000 hectares of land.
The cities of Penco and Lirquen, near Concepción, have seen the most evacuations. These cities have a combined population of 60, 000 people. The heat is also a big problem, with temperatures expected to reach 38C in the next two days.
This isn't the first time Chile has faced such disasters. Two years ago, forest fires killed over 120 people in the Valparaíso region. It's clear that these fires are a recurring issue, and the country needs to find better ways to handle them.
