China builds world’s fastest wind tunnel with explosive power

ChinaSun Apr 05 2026
China opened a new kind of wind tunnel in 2023 that runs faster than any other on record. Called JF-22, it stretches 167 meters long with a four-meter wide test section. Instead of giant fans, it uses chemical explosions to whip air to Mach 30 speeds—nearly 23, 000 mph—faster than a space shuttle coming home. The device can run for 130 milliseconds at a time, compared to America’s top tunnel which only manages 30 ms at Mach 7. The power needed equals 70% of the output from the Three Gorges Dam, the planet’s biggest hydroelectric plant.
Most western tunnels focus on planes that fly within the atmosphere. China’s tunnel, however, mimics the brutal heat and pressure a spacecraft faces when slamming back into Earth. Reports suggest this lets China test hypersonic missiles and next-gen spaceplanes years ahead of schedule. But some experts worry chemical blasts could taint the air inside the tunnel, making results less reliable than real flight. NASA once relied heavily on older tunnels like the Unitary Plan in California, which only reached a fraction of these speeds. The agency later filled gaps with computer models, skipping some physical tests. Meanwhile, the U. S. has talked about moving away from large wind tunnels entirely. If America wants to catch up, it will need a new approach—one that balances explosive power, clean air, and cost without simply copying China’s design.
