China Says US Proposal on Hormuz Is Ill‑Timed
United Nations Headquarters, New York City, USASat May 16 2026
The United Nations sees a new twist in the debate over the Strait of Hormuz. China’s representative to the UN, Fu Gong, openly questioned a draft resolution that the United States and Bahrain have pushed forward. He said the wording was wrong and the moment was off, warning that a vote would likely be blocked by Russia or China.
The draft calls on Iran to stop attacks and mining in the strait, a move that many diplomats fear could inflame tensions. China has already vetoed a similar U. S. -backed proposal last month, arguing it unfairly targets Iran.
Fu spoke in a brief interview on the Pass Blue news portal, telling reporters that instead of passing a resolution now, both sides should sit down and negotiate seriously. “We don’t think the content is right, and the timing isn’t right, ” he said.
He added that if China were chair of the Security Council, it would refuse to bring the resolution to a vote. The UN mission said that as council president China must arrange a vote if asked, but no one has requested it yet.
The U. S. mission did not reply to a request for comment at the time of the interview.
Fu’s comments came after a two‑day summit between U. S. President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping, which ended with a joint statement that the strait must stay open. Xi also made it clear China opposes any militarization or tolls for using the waterway, though he did not comment directly on the resolution.
China’s foreign ministry has voiced frustration over the Iran conflict, calling it unnecessary and insisting it should not continue. The situation remains fluid as the Security Council weighs its next steps.
