China has hit back hard at the U. S. , accusing it of double standards when it comes to spying. The rebuke came after the CIA tried to hire Chinese informants. Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian spoke about this at a recent press briefing. He was responding to a report in the Wall Street Journal that talked about how China's spying on Western countries had gotten bigger under President Xi Jinping. The report also mentioned that Chinese hackers had hacked over 250, 000 devices in several countries, including the U. S. and the U. K.
Lin said that Western media has been spreading false information about Chinese spying activities without any proof. He pointed out that the CIA had posted instructions in Chinese on social media platforms like X (formerly Twitter) and YouTube. These posts told Chinese nationals how to safely contact the CIA. China saw this as a violation of their national interests.
"The CIA has been using all sorts of sneaky methods to steal secrets from other countries and interfere in their internal affairs, " Lin said. Newsweek tried to get a comment from the CIA about this. Lin also criticized the U. S. for doing spy activities worldwide while accusing other countries of spying. He promised that Beijing would take strong action against any attempts to disrupt or infiltrate the country.
A recent interview with Bloomberg showed that the CIA wants to get information from people who are unhappy with Xi's rule. Xi is now in his third term, and his rule has been marked by more control and a slowing economy. Since last year, China's top intelligence agency has been warning its citizens about foreign spies. They have been asking people to be careful and report any suspicious activities to the authorities.
