China has restated its dedication to collaborating globally on key issues, contrasting with the US's recent decisions. President Trump pulled the US out of the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Paris Climate Agreement again. Some experts believe this could give China a chance to boost its global leadership role.
China's Foreign Ministry spokesperson, Guo Jiakun, highlighted the WHO's importance in global health. He promised China would continue supporting the WHO and working on climate change. The year 2024 saw global temperatures exceed a key threshold set by the Paris Agreement.
President Trump's move to leave the WHO was not new. The US had also briefly left the Paris Agreement under his administration, which was later reversed by President Biden. Trump criticized the WHO's funding demands and China's contribution.
Experts like Ottmar Edenhofer warned that Trump's exit could weaken US influence and reduce pressure on other major polluters. Meanwhile, China called for cooperation, hoping to stabilize its economy and avoid higher tariffs.
