China Urges Keeping Iran Ceasefire and Reopening Hormuz Strait
New York, NY, USA,Sat May 02 2026
China’s U. N. envoy said it is critical to keep the pause in fighting between Iran and its rivals intact. He urged that the Strait of Hormuz be opened again, warning that a closed passage would become a key topic when U. S. President Trump visits Beijing later this month.
The ambassador expressed worry over recent comments suggesting the ceasefire might only be temporary and that new attacks could start soon. He called for Iran to lift its restrictions on the waterway and for the United States to end its naval blockade.
Maintaining peace, he argued, must be the top priority. He urged honest talks between both sides and asked the global community to speak out against any return to conflict.
When asked about Trump’s trip, he noted that if the Strait remains closed by then, the issue would dominate their discussions. He also denied reports of military cooperation between China and Iran.
The remarks came as China leads the U. N. Security Council for a month, with Foreign Minister Wang Yi scheduled to chair a meeting on May 26. No immediate response was received from the U. S. State Department regarding a possible meeting with Secretary of State Marco Rubio.
