Taiwan and China are in a tense standoff over trade, with Beijing threatening further action against the island. This comes a few days after China criticized Taiwan's President Lai Ching-Te for his national day speech. China sees Taiwan as part of its territory and dislikes Lai for promoting Taiwanese independence. Lai, however, insists that only Taiwan's people can decide their future.
China's commerce ministry announced on Saturday that they are looking into additional trade measures. They accused Taiwan's ruling party, the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), of not taking practical steps to lift trade barriers. This could lead to new tariffs or other economic pressures for Taiwan.
The trade dispute between the two sides has been ongoing. In May, China reimposed tariffs on 134 imported items from Taiwan. This move was in response to Taiwan not reciprocating certain trade concessions under the Cross-Strait Economic Cooperation Framework Agreement (ECFA).
China's Taiwan Affairs Office has criticized Lai's speech, saying it promotes separatist ideas. They believe the core issue is the DPP's stance on Taiwan independence, making negotiations difficult.
While Lai's speech was firm on Taiwan's independence, he also expressed willingness to work with China on global challenges like climate change. This mixed message seems to have angered China even more.
It's a delicate situation where both sides are holding onto their stances, but the real impact will be felt by the people and businesses of Taiwan if new trade measures are implemented.
