In a bold move, Chinese authorities targeted a large underground church network. They didn't hold back. Police stormed a Sunday service, handcuffed a pastor during a senior retreat, and even showed up at a pastor's home late at night.
This wasn't a one-time thing. It was a coordinated effort. Pastors were grabbed from different places - Shanghai, Beijing's outskirts, and even a home in Guangxi. All this happened in early October. Nearly 30 pastors and church members were detained. They were part of Zion Church, one of China's biggest unofficial Protestant groups.
This crackdown was huge. Activists say it's the largest against Christians in years. And it might not be over yet. Many are worried it's just the start.
The people caught up in this weren't all the same. Some had been Christians since they were kids. Others joined recently. Their ages ranged from 30 to 50. They had different jobs too - lawyers, physicists, even music students.
So far, 18 people have been formally arrested. But the police aren't sharing much. Families only got one-sentence notices. They don't even know where their loved ones are being held.
