Having a conversation, and someone else knows who you called, when, and where. That’s exactly what happened to many Americans, all thanks to a hacking group from China. This group, known as “Salt Typhoon, ” has been stealing metadata from cellphones across the country. This includes information like who you called, how long your call lasted, and where you made it from – but not the content of the call itself. The US government is taking this seriously. A senior official, who asked to remain anonymous, said that the hacking is ongoing and that the Chinese government has access to a broad range of America’s telecom infrastructure. They added that it’s not every American, but potentially a large number of individuals who have been targeted.
Salt Typhoon didn’t just stop at Americans. They hacked dozens of companies worldwide, including at least eight telecom firms in the US. Some telecom companies like T-Mobile and Lumen have said no customer data was compromised, but in other cases, the hackers allegedly stole telephone audio intercepts and a large amount of call record data. This metadata, even without the actual conversation content, can reveal a lot about a person’s life, work, and relationships. It’s like a puzzle that when put together, paints a detailed picture. The White House has made tackling these hackers a priority. President Biden has been briefed several times about these intrusions. Meanwhile, a classified briefing was held for senators about Salt Typhoon’s efforts to compromise American telecom companies. The briefing was led by key individuals from the FBI’s national intelligence, the Federal Communications Commission, the National Security Council, and the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency.
