China’s Quiet Role at Singapore Defence Talk Misses Chance, Australian Minister Says
SingaporeFri May 29 2026
Australia’s defence chief said China’s limited participation in the Shangri‑La Dialogue was a lost opportunity for strategic dialogue. He argued that many countries need clear reassurance from Beijing about its intentions. The event is the biggest defence gathering in Asia, and leaders expect to share ideas and build trust.
The Chinese delegation this year is mainly scholars and experts, not senior officials. China’s defence minister has missed the meeting for two consecutive years. Other countries send top ministers, including Australia, Japan, France and Britain.
The Australian minister praised the forum’s value but noted that China has not offered enough strategic clarity. He said China has built up its conventional forces since World War II, yet it has not provided the reassurance other nations seek. He also highlighted that the United States remains a key partner in Australia’s security strategy.
The minister pointed out that global rules‑based order is under strain in the Indo‑Pacific. He called for cooperation among nations that share common ground. The AUKUS alliance, involving the United States and Britain, is preparing a major announcement about nuclear‑powered submarines.
The overall message was that China’s low profile at the forum limits meaningful engagement, and that stronger ties with allies are essential for stability in the region.
