China’s Space Team Extends Their Stay Beyond the Stars
Jiuquan, ChinaFri Apr 17 2026
China’s latest space team has decided to spend a little more time floating around in space than originally planned. The three astronauts, who took off from a launch site in China’s Gobi Desert last fall, were supposed to come back in April after six months. Now, they’ll stay up there for another month to keep running tests and experiments. Their mission isn’t just about hanging out in orbit—they’re also helping test new tools and gear for future space projects.
Among the crew is Wu Fei, China’s youngest astronaut ever sent into space at just 32 years old. Commander Zhang Lu, who’s 48, has been to space before, while the third member, Zhang Hongzhang, is 39. Together, they’ve already installed protective gear against space junk and checked outside equipment for damage. So far, everything’s running smoothly up there, and they’re still in great shape despite being in space for over five months.
The extra month isn’t just for fun—it’s about pushing the limits of how long humans can safely stay in space. Scientists want to know more about how living in orbit affects the body over time. Meanwhile, the crew will keep running experiments and making sure the space station stays in top condition. No exact return date has been set yet, but their trip is clearly taking a longer route than expected.
