China’s Tech Push to Beat U. S. Rivalry
Beijing, ChinaThu Mar 05 2026
China is turning its focus toward cutting‑edge science to stay ahead of the United States.
The country’s leader has set a five‑year plan that pushes investment into fields such as artificial intelligence, quantum chips, new energy sources and next‑generation communications.
These areas are seen as the engines that will strengthen China’s economy, its military power and its cultural influence.
The plan was first sketched out in October and is expected to be approved by the national legislature next week.
Officials say that as U. S. –China tensions rise, China must accelerate its progress in these technologies to avoid being shut out of key markets.
The strategy includes creating new growth sectors like bio‑manufacturing, hydrogen fuel and fusion power, as well as advanced human–machine interfaces and 6G wireless networks.
Each of these projects is meant to fill gaps where China currently relies on imported equipment or expertise.
At the same time, Beijing is working to protect its military and economic systems from potential sanctions or technology cuts.
Even while preparing for a meeting with former U. S. President Trump, the Chinese leadership is doubling down on self‑reliance in semiconductors and other critical components.
The overall goal is to ensure that China can compete globally without depending on Western technology, turning innovation into a tool for national resilience.
