City Boosts Bike Patrols as E‑bike Craze Rises

Elyria, Ohio, USAThu May 28 2026
Elyria is stepping up its road watch to keep pace with the growing popularity of electric bikes, dirt bikes and scooters. As spring rolls in, more people are hitting streets, parks and pools on these fast vehicles. The police chief told the council that patrols will increase across traffic, bike lanes and neighborhood spots. Council members are worried about reckless rides. One councilman mentioned a fatal crash involving a child on an e‑bike in another town and urged Elyria to teach safety before something similar happens here. The city wants kids to know the rules before they speed away.
Police officers are getting new training on laws that cover e‑bikes, scooters and off‑road bikes. They have also put together a guide to help spot the different types of vehicles and understand what the law says about each. Another councilman pointed out that some cities start with school programs and then add enforcement. He warned that scooters can be easily tweaked to go faster than they should. The city plans to widen its bike safety outreach. That includes handing out helmets and running lessons in schools, at Safety Town events and with local groups. Elyria already works with the Lorain County Public Health Department to keep bike safety on the agenda all year. The goal is simple: give people the knowledge they need and keep streets safer while still letting them enjoy their rides.
