City Council Steps in to End Clerk’s Suspension
Tarrant, Texas, USASun Mar 22 2026
The council of a small Alabama town decided last Thursday that the mayor’s four‑day pause on City Clerk Laverne Knight was not justified.
The mayor had placed Knight on hold last week, but the council did not back that decision when they met in the evening.
Three council members said no, two said yes and one chose not to vote.
Because the majority did not support the suspension, Knight is expected to return to work.
The details behind the disagreement are unclear.
The mayor chose not to speak about personnel issues, and she did not mention Knight’s name when she presented the motion.
Knight’s lawyer said that the council’s vote shows a willingness to move past conflict and help restore a healthier workplace.
He also said Knight will keep her salary.
Earlier, the lawyer notified the city that Knight plans to sue for one million dollars over a hostile work environment.
That lawsuit is still pending, according to the lawyer.
The incident highlights tensions between the clerk and city officials.
It also shows how a council can check a mayor’s power in a local government setting.
