Water from homes travels through pipes to a treatment plant. There, it goes through several steps to become clean again. First, large items like sticks and plastic are removed. Then, in the primary treatment, oils and greases float to the top, while solids sink to the bottom. Next, bacteria help break down organic matter in the secondary treatment. Finally, in the optional tertiary treatment, the water is filtered and treated with chemicals or UV light.
The Page Wastewater Treatment Plant serves about 7, 100 people. It releases treated water into the South Fork of the Coeur d’Alene River. Until recently, the plant lacked tertiary treatment, so extra nutrients and metals still ended up in the river. This is changing thanks to funding from Idaho Governor Little’s initiative. The plant aims to reduce phosphorus by up to 7, 000 pounds per year. Just one pound of phosphorus can cause 500 pounds of algae, leading to water quality issues.
For the past two and a half years, the Page plant has been upgrading its facilities. A pilot study helped determine the best technology and equipment. In fall 2024, they started designing and procuring materials for the new tertiary treatment building. Construction began in May 2025. Crews are building two new structures: one for chemical systems and another for a Solids Contact Clarifier (SCC). The SCC is a large circular concrete structure. Building it involves intricate wood forms, reinforced steel, and careful pouring. Cold weather adds challenges, but progress is being made.
The full upgrade is expected to be completed by July 2026, with final touches by September 2026. This project is a big step toward improving water quality in the Coeur d’Alene River. It shows how important it is to invest in modern treatment technologies. The plant's efforts will help protect the river and the environment for years to come.
