CNews Faces French Authority Over Bias Claims
Paris, FranceTue Jun 16 2026
The French media regulator, Arcom, has told the conservative news outlet CNews to adjust its programming so it offers more balanced viewpoints. The channel, owned by billionaire Vincent Bollore, has been likened to the U. S. Fox News for its strong opinion style and frequent focus on immigration and security topics, which critics argue supports far‑right ideas. Arcom’s decision followed a review of CNews’ broadcasts last year, prompted by a complaint from the international watchdog Reporters Without Borders. The regulator said that in March 2025, the channel’s coverage was “structurally unbalanced, ” giving little space for opposing voices.
Arcom clarified that its job is not to police opinions but to ensure diverse perspectives are presented on every issue. CNews has responded by stating it will take the matter to court, claiming the ruling infringes on freedom of expression and editorial independence. This development comes just before France’s presidential election, where far‑right candidates are leading polls. French law requires broadcasters to provide honest, independent and pluralistic coverage, especially in news programs. The regulator can fine outlets or revoke licences if they fail to meet these standards.
