Coaches, Parents, and Young Athletes: A New Path for Mental Health
Colorado, USA, Arvada,Sun Mar 22 2026
In Colorado, a new law called “Alyssa’s Act” is being discussed. It focuses on mental health for kids who play sports. The idea came after a family tragedy involving a young athlete named Alyssa. She loved soccer and skiing, but her life ended after several concussions. Researchers say head injuries can lead to serious mood problems and even suicide in teens.
The act would give all youth sports coaches a basic training on mental health. They would learn how to spot signs of anxiety or depression. Coaches would also know what questions parents should ask after a concussion. The goal is to keep kids safe, both on the field and in their minds.
Athletes often feel pressure from competition. They are told to be “tough” and push through pain. But mental recovery is just as important as physical healing. If a player returns too soon, they may face more problems later.
Coaches shape the environment of sports. When they encourage teamwork and respect, players feel more confident. With mental health training, coaches can notice when a child is struggling and connect them to help.
The law has already passed the Senate. It will soon go to the House for a final vote. If approved, it could set a new standard for sports across the state.
Parents and communities can support this effort by staying informed. They should ask coaches about mental health policies. Together, we can create a safer space for young athletes to grow.
