Co‑Copper Duo Boosts Water Clean‑Up on MXene Sheet

A team of researchers has built a new catalyst that can break down the pain‑killer acetaminophen from water more efficiently than before. The trick is to stick two different metal atoms – cobalt and copper – onto a thin sheet called Ti₃C₂Tₓ MXene. By balancing the two metals at a 1:1 ratio, they created a surface that grabs the oxidizer peroxymonosulfate (PMS) and turns it into a powerful cleaning agent.
In tests, the catalyst removed 97 % of acetaminophen in just one hour at almost neutral pH and mild temperature. This performance is 21–59 % better than catalysts that use only one type of metal atom. The researchers used a statistical design called response surface methodology to find the best conditions, showing that the system works well without harsh chemicals or extreme heat.
To understand how the reaction proceeds, they turned to quenching experiments and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR). These studies revealed that the degradation involves several reactive oxygen species – mainly hydroxyl radicals, superoxide anions, and singlet oxygen – together with high‑valent metal‑oxo species formed at the cobalt and copper sites. The two metals cooperate to speed up electron transfer, which in turn accelerates the redox cycles of Co⁰/Co²⁺ and Cu⁺/Cu²⁺. Density functional theory calculations confirmed that the dual‑atom arrangement improves PMS adsorption and makes the overall reaction faster.
The breakdown of acetaminophen follows a clear pathway: first, hydroxyl groups add to the benzene ring; then the ring opens and the acetyl group is removed. Finally, further oxidation breaks down the remaining fragments into harmless molecules. The researchers also checked the toxicity of the treated water and found it to be much lower than before, proving that the method is safe for the environment.
Overall, this study shows how combining two metal atoms on a MXene support can create a highly active catalyst for water purification. It offers a promising route to remove stubborn pharmaceutical contaminants from wastewater using mild, eco‑friendly conditions.
