Colombia’s Conflict Takes a Heavy Toll on Civilians in 2025
Bogota, ColombiaWed May 13 2026
For the first time in ten years, Colombia’s ongoing conflict has pushed civilian suffering to record levels. The International Red Cross reports that violence and disregard for war rules by armed groups have made life harder for thousands. Many people now avoid certain areas, live under strict rules, or flee their homes to escape danger. The numbers tell a grim story: more than 235, 000 people were forced to leave their homes alone, while nearly 87, 000 fled in larger groups. Nearly 177, 000 people were trapped in their towns, cut off from basic needs after armed groups imposed curfews or blocked roads.
The rise in violence has been sharp. Displacements have doubled compared to last year, confinement has nearly doubled, and disappearances increased significantly. Explosives like landmines killed or injured over 900 civilians, marking a 34% jump from 2024. Armed groups have also targeted health workers, with 282 violent incidents documented. Beyond displacement and injuries, civilians face threats, sexual violence, and the forced recruitment of minors into armed groups. Experts warn the crisis has built up for years, with no signs of improving soon.
