Combining Money Help and Mind Skills to Stop Teen Depression

The study looks at whether a mix of money‑support and self‑control training can stop anxiety and sadness in young people who live in cities with big poverty. Researchers are testing this idea in three countries: Colombia, Nepal and South Africa. Instead of treating only the money problem or only the mental health problem, the trial gives a special program that does both at once. The goal is to see if this dual approach is doable and liked by the teens and their families. The trial uses a cluster design, meaning whole schools are chosen at random to receive the program or not. There will be four groups in total, and each group gets a slightly different version of the plan to figure out what works best.
The researchers think that if a teen learns how to manage feelings and also gets help with basic needs, they might stay happier and less likely to develop serious depression or anxiety. The study will collect data on how many teens finish the program, how they feel about it, and whether their stress levels drop. If the pilot shows promise, the next step could be a larger study that covers more schools and uses the winning mix of money help and mind training. The hope is to create a model that can be rolled out in many low‑income urban areas worldwide.
