Connecticut’s crime drop in 2025 – but not all crimes are shrinking

Connecticut, USAThu Apr 09 2026
Connecticut closed 2025 with safer streets than the year before. Violent crime fell by almost 8%, homicides dropped from 90 to 70, and simple assaults slid 10%. Even thefts from cars nosedived by 31%. Yet behind these numbers sits a twist: drug offenses soared 13%, identity theft spiked 18%, and arsons jumped nearly 19%. Simple assaults fell by about 10%, and aggravated assault dropped by a little over 21%, according to the data. Rapes in 2025 fell by nearly 21%, and incidents involving other criminal sexual contact dropped by nearly 13%.
Property crimes as a whole tumbled 17%, pulled down by sharp drops in motor-vehicle theft and burglary. At the same time, fraud climbed 4%, pushed up by an 18% leap in identity theft cases and a 13% rise in hacking incidents. The report also shows prostitution offenses skyrocketed 58%, while kidnappings and intimidation rose just over 2% and 1% respectively—small numbers, but still a shift in the wrong direction. The state’s narcotics violations marched upward every quarter, reflecting tighter scrutiny rather than looser laws. In contrast, weapon violations slipped 13%, showing firearms incidents aren’t driving the statewide crime trends. Animal cruelty cases also fell over 10%. Experts see the progress as proof that coordination between local, state and federal teams pays off. Yet they keep their focus on pockets where numbers are climbing: fraud, arson and prostitution, where the increases demand creative responses beyond traditional patrols.
