If the same drug that helps manage diabetes could also protect against Alzheimer's. That's what a recent study suggests about Ozempic, a diabetes medication. According to research published in the journal Alzheimer’s & Dementia, Ozempic's active ingredient, semaglutide, might lower the risk of Alzheimer’s in people with Type 2 diabetes. This isn't the first time GLP-1 drugs, which include Ozempic and others like Mounjaro, have been linked to brain benefits. Earlier studies showed similar results, suggesting these drugs might slow cognitive decline in people with Alzheimer’s. So, how does this work? Researchers studied medical records of over a million patients with Type 2 diabetes aged 60 and above. They compared semaglutide to seven other diabetes drugs, including metformin and insulin. The results? Patients taking semaglutide had a significantly lower risk of developing Alzheimer’s, especially when compared to those taking insulin. This drug might even outperform older GLP-1 drugs like liraglutide.
But what's the big deal about semaglutide? Well, Alzheimer’s has no cure. Current treatments approved by the FDA target amyloid plaques in the brain but come with serious side effects and high costs. If semaglutide proves effective, it could be the first preventive treatment. Experts think semaglutide might protect the brain by fighting inflammation and other risk factors for dementia. But they also warn that more research is needed before we can say for sure. After all, early studies on statins and other drugs suggested they could help, but those promises didn't pan out. The drug company Novo Nordisk is currently running clinical trials to see if semaglutide can slow down Alzheimer’s. Results are expected next year. If positive, it could open a new door in treating this devastating disease.
