Couples Talk, Women Gain Power: A New Approach in Ethiopia

Hadiya zone, central EthiopiaSat May 02 2026
In a region of central Ethiopia, many women face harm from their partners. A study set out to test whether talking with partners in community health settings could change how women see and handle this danger. Researchers chose several villages, split them into two groups, and offered one group a program where couples learned about violence, its causes, and ways to protect themselves. The other villages did not receive this training.
After several months, the trained couples showed higher awareness about what counts as abuse. They also felt more confident that they could stop or prevent violent acts. Importantly, the data revealed that women in the program were less likely to stay in abusive relationships and more likely to seek help. The study suggests that simple, local conversations can shift attitudes and lead to safer lives. The findings highlight the importance of involving men in efforts to end domestic violence. When both partners understand the risks and responsibilities, communities can build healthier futures for everyone.
