A recent decision by a U. S. appeals court has allowed the Trump administration to cut Medicaid funding for Planned Parenthood in 22 states. This move is part of a law that stops health centers from getting Medicaid money if they perform abortions. The court's decision is a big deal because it overturns a previous ruling that had blocked the law.
Planned Parenthood says this law is hurting them. They claim it was made to target them specifically. Since the law passed in July, at least 20 of their health centers have had to close. That's a lot of places where people can't go for health care anymore.
The law is part of a bigger bill passed by Republicans. It says that if a health center does abortions and gets more than $800, 000 from Medicaid, they can't get any more money. Planned Parenthood says this is unfair and is fighting it in court.
A judge named Indira Talwani had initially stopped the law from being enforced. She said it was unconstitutional. But the appeals court, which has judges appointed by Democratic presidents, said the Trump administration might win when the case is fully heard.
This is not the first time the court has changed its mind. Earlier, they had paused Talwani's ruling. Now, they have allowed the law to be enforced. This means Planned Parenthood will have a harder time providing services in those 22 states.
