Crime Numbers Drop, But Who Gets the Credit?

Dan Bongino, a former FBI Deputy Director, has some strong words for the media. He believes they are not giving enough credit to the Trump administration for a big drop in crime. According to Bongino, the FBI made a lot of progress under Trump's leadership. They arrested more violent criminals, took record amounts of drugs off the streets, and even caught some of the FBI's most wanted fugitives.
Bongino pointed out that the murder rate is the lowest it's been since 1900. That's a huge deal! But he thinks the media is downplaying this achievement. He said, "The murder rate is the lowest it’s been since 1900. " He added, "By definition, there’s no modern precedent for that. "
A recent report from the Council on Criminal Justice supports Bongino's claims. It found that most types of crime decreased in 2025 compared to the previous year. Violent crime, in particular, fell to its lowest levels since 2019. The report even suggested that 2025 might have the lowest homicide rate ever recorded.
But Bongino isn't happy with how some media outlets are reporting this news. He accused outlets like Axios and the New York Times of acknowledging the crime drop but not giving Trump enough credit. He said, "There's a thousand excuses as to why President Trump and his administration didn't do it. Meanwhile, I lived it. I know what we did and didn’t do. "
Bongino also criticized a New York Times headline that suggested FBI Director Kash Patel is "Making America Less Safe. " He questioned the credibility of the headline, saying, "Do you dipwads even read your own headlines? "
