Crime Rates Drop in Big US Cities

USAMon May 11 2026
The latest snapshot from the Major Cities Chiefs Association shows that violent crime has slipped in almost every category across 67 major U. S. police departments during the first quarter of 2026. Homicides fell by nearly 18 percent, from 1, 333 to 1, 097. Robberies dropped by about 20 percent, rapes declined slightly more than 7 percent, and aggravated assaults fell under 5 percent. These figures are still provisional but point to a broad downward trend. Some cities have seen dramatic reductions. Washington reported only 12 homicides in the first three months, a decline of more than 60 percent from the previous year. Philadelphia’s count fell to 23, while Memphis and Houston also reported lower numbers than in 2025. New York City’s homicide tally dropped to 43 under its new mayor, and Los Angeles fell to 46. Even Aurora, Colorado—a city that drew national attention over alleged gang activity—reported just two homicides in the quarter, down from six.
These declines contrast with President Trump’s justification for deploying federal troops to cities like Los Angeles, Washington, and Memphis in June 2025. The administration claimed crime was “out of control, ” but the cost of those deployments, estimated at roughly $496 million through December, has been challenged by courts and political opponents. Trump ended some missions late last year while keeping forces in a few other cities. Not every city follows the same pattern. Minneapolis, Atlanta, and Virginia Beach saw overall increases in violent crime, largely due to more aggravated assaults. Police officials warn that crime often rises during the summer months. The downward trend began before Trump’s second term. Researchers point to post‑pandemic recovery, federal funding for community violence prevention during the Biden era, improved crime‑fighting technology, and broader economic shifts as possible drivers. The White House credits Trump’s enforcement push, while the MCCA data remain quarterly and preliminary; final national statistics will come from the FBI later this year.
