Researchers have explored a unique approach to understand recidivism—the tendency of released prisoners to commit crimes again. They used a model called the trivariate Weibull survival model, which takes into account the competing risks of committing different types of crimes. This means they considered the likelihood of committing sex crimes, violent crimes, or other types of crimes after release.
One interesting finding was that the time it takes for someone to commit a sex crime or a violent crime is more closely linked than the time it takes to commit other types of crimes. In other words, if a person commits a sex crime, they might be more likely to also commit a violent crime, and vice versa.
The study also discovered that the chances of being arrested for other crimes are higher than being arrested for violent crimes, which are in turn higher than being arrested for sex crimes. This order shows a pattern in the types of crimes people are more likely to commit after being released from prison.
