Crypto drops and who really feels the pinch

United States, USASat Jun 06 2026
Bitcoin just had its worst week in June, losing over 15 percent of its value and wiping out months of gains. The crash brings the price back to where it was before the last election, even though it had hit a record high late last year. Other major cryptocurrencies like Ethereum and XRP followed the same downward trend, showing that this isn't just a Bitcoin problem. The drop comes at a time when the government seems supportive of crypto, which makes the situation even more puzzling. Political optimism and regulatory expectations had pushed prices up before, but now the market is sending a different message. The idea of a government bitcoin reserve was supposed to boost confidence, but it didn't bring in many new investors. With prices falling again, it looks like politics alone can't keep the market afloat.
Not many Americans actually own crypto. Only about one in five have any kind of digital currency, and most of them are young men. The gap between those who understand crypto and those who don't is growing wider. Nearly half of Gen Z and millennials say they might buy crypto soon, but almost 60 percent of people who don’t own any say they don’t get how it works. Trust in crypto exchanges is also low, with only a small fraction of non-owners seeing them as reliable. Big news like government plans or companies joining major stock indexes don’t seem to move the needle much with the general public. Most people barely notice these developments, meaning the crypto market is staying small and focused on a narrow group of believers. The people who own crypto right now are likely to buy more, while everyone else stays on the sidelines. For most Americans, a crypto crash doesn’t mean much. The regular financial system doesn’t depend on digital money, so everyday spending and savings aren’t affected. But for those who do own crypto, especially younger investors or companies that have it on their books, the losses can be real. If the downturn keeps going, some might have to rethink their plans.
