Crypto Heist in Nancy: A Real‑World “Wrench Attack”
Nancy, Meurthe-et-Moselle, France,Tue Jun 16 2026
A 32‑year‑old man from Vaujours has been charged in Nancy for a violent robbery that targeted a crypto couple. The attackers pretended to be police officers and tried to seize $20, 000 worth of digital money. They used personal data that leaked from the Waltio tax platform in January, which exposed accounts of about 50, 000 users.
The assault began when a woman was stopped outside her apartment. Her husband answered the door, and both were violently beaten by men who claimed to be law enforcement. The attackers fled after the couple’s daughters called the police. Police found plastic zip ties and a €5 note left behind, while witnesses said the robbers were armed with an Uzi submachine gun.
Waltio’s data breach revealed email addresses, trading gains and losses, and crypto balances for thousands of customers. The hackers tried to extort the platform before selling the stolen information. Waltio warned that attackers could pose as fake customer service or police to trick users into revealing more details.
This incident is part of a growing trend in France, where several crypto‑related kidnappings and home invasions have occurred. Notable cases include the kidnapping of Ledger co‑founder David Balland and a March robbery that forced a couple to hand over $1 million in Bitcoin. French officials have responded by meeting with crypto industry leaders and launching investigations that now involve 88 suspects, including minors.
In the United States, a similar “wrench attack” led to a 47‑year prison sentence for Remy St. Felix, the leader of a violent crypto ring. Other countries have seen comparable crimes, such as Ukrainian police allegedly kidnapping entrepreneurs for ransom and California suspects charged in a wrench attack spree.
These events highlight the need for stronger security measures, both online and offline, for people who hold cryptocurrency. Users must stay vigilant against phishing scams and be cautious about sharing personal information, especially after a data breach.
