Dallas City Hall May Move: New Plan to Save Money
Dallas, USAWed Jun 10 2026
The city’s chief financial officer has suggested that Dallas should leave its current City Hall building instead of fixing it up. This is the first time city staff has officially recommended moving away from the old downtown structure.
The proposal comes after a study that shows repairing the 50‑year‑old I. M. Pei design would cost between $532 million and $611 million over ten years. To pay for it, the city would need to borrow about $770 million, which could crowd out other projects like parks and housing.
If Dallas tried to pay the repairs with cash, it might have to raise property taxes by about 6. 9 cents per $100 of assessed value or cut spending on things such as parks, libraries and arts. The study said the city could save $152 million in 2029 by cutting these services, but that would mean serious cuts or higher taxes.
Instead of fixing the old building, city staff says moving to a new location would save money in the long run. They point out that downtown office space is cheap right now, so buying or leasing a new site could reduce future costs. The old City Hall site would also become available for redevelopment, which could bring new jobs and businesses to downtown.
The city council is set to vote on the move, but some members want a court order to stop the meeting because they say the public wasn’t properly notified. A judge could decide whether the council can meet as scheduled.
The proposal also asks if the city should keep working on a bond plan that could raise about $941 million for things like new police training centers and emergency operations. That bond would include money for pension obligations.
