In a tragic incident on Tuesday, militants attacked a health center in Pakistan's Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, where polio vaccinations were being organized. The attack led to a shootout that sadly claimed the life of a police officer, with three attackers also killed. The health workers were fortunately unharmed. A similar incident occurred in North Waziristan, where militants took weapons from officers and threatened health workers not to participate in the polio drive.
These attacks reflect ongoing violence targeting polio campaigns, with militants falsely claiming vaccination is a Western plot. Polio remains a problem in Pakistan and Afghanistan, the only countries where it hasn't been eradicated. Pakistan is currently conducting its third polio vaccination drive this year, aiming to immunize 45 million children. In Afghanistan, vaccinations have started in 16 provinces, targeting over 6 million kids.
