Detecting disease markers in spit: a new tech breakthrough
Fri May 08 2026
A tiny gadget might soon help spot serious illnesses just by checking your spit. Scientists built a sensor using carbon nanotubes and transistors to catch a key inflammation marker called interleukin-6 (IL-6). This protein shows up in higher amounts when cancer spreads or during major infections like COVID-19. Instead of drawing blood, the sensor works with spit, making tests easier and cheaper.
The team created a paper-thin sensor that can spot IL-6 even when it’s barely there. It works in a liquid similar to spit, detecting amounts as small as 1. 15 picograms per milliliter. That’s like finding a single grain of salt in an Olympic-sized pool. The sensor also stays reliable over time, giving the same results if tested again.
What’s impressive is how well it handles real spit, not just clean lab samples. When tested with artificial spit spiked with IL-6, it correctly found the protein every time. The readings stayed steady, proving it could work outside a perfect lab setting.
This tech could change how doctors check for diseases. Instead of waiting for lab results, a quick spit test might give answers in minutes. It’s still early, but the idea of turning spit into a health report is a big step.
