Detective Hudson makes a comeback to Hudson & Rex after health fight
St. John’s, Newfoundland, CanadaFri May 29 2026
The show Hudson & Rex is bringing back a familiar face for its ninth season. Detective Charlie Hudson, played by John Reardon, left the series after seven seasons, only to return this year. Filming kicks off in June in St. John’s, Newfoundland. Reardon took a break in 2024 after revealing he had tonsil cancer, which he later said he had recovered from. Yet, his exit from season eight wasn’t his choice, as he mentioned that the production team decided to move in another direction.
This season promises some surprises. Hudson’s return isn’t just a simple comeback—it ties into a major storyline. The last time viewers saw him, he was on a mission in South America searching for his missing brother, Jack. Now, he’s back in St. John’s with one final mission to complete before moving on. This throws a wrench into the team’s usual routine and leaves Rex, the K9 cop, in an awkward spot. The dynamic between Hudson and Rex shifts, and it affects the entire police department.
Behind the scenes, the show has seen changes too. The original dog playing Rex, Diesel von Burgimwald, passed away during season seven. Now, his relatives—Dillon, Dante, and others—are stepping into the role to continue the K9’s legacy. The new season will have 12 episodes, keeping the same core cast, including Mayko Nguyen, Kevin Hanchard, Justin Kelly, and Luke Roberts, who joined as Detective Mark Hudson in Reardon’s absence.
Fans can expect Hudson & Rex season nine to hit screens this fall on CityTV in Canada. Meanwhile, the current season is already airing in the U. S. on UP Faith & Family, starting June 11. The show keeps evolving, blending drama, crime-solving, and a touch of unexpected returns.
