Detroit is making a big move to support its young people. The city has just set up a new Youth and Education Department. This is a big deal because it shows that Detroit is serious about investing in its future.
The mayor, Mary Sheffield, made this announcement. She said that to make Detroit better, they need to focus on the kids. She appointed two important leaders for this new department. Dr. Chanel Hampton will be the senior director. Jerjuan Howard, a well-known youth leader, will be the director of youth affairs.
This new department won't control the schools. But it will work closely with them. About half of Detroit's students go to public schools. The other half go to charter schools. The city wants to help all of them.
The department has big plans. They want to reduce absenteeism. They also want to improve transportation for students. Plus, they will expand after-school programs. And they will tackle social issues that families face.
Dr. Hampton said they will help kids from birth to age 26. They will focus on education, jobs, and getting involved in the community. She said the first 100 days will include listening to the community. They will also meet with school leaders and hold a forum.
Nikolai Vitti, the superintendent of Detroit Public Schools, is excited. He said Detroit has an opportunity gap, not a talent gap. He believes collaboration is key.
Jerjuan Howard said youth should be part of the decision-making process. He said changes should happen with youth, not to them.
The department will work within the current budget. But some proposals will need City Council approval later.
